Stepping in front of the camera for a personal branding photoshoot can feel intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. The secret to images that feel authentic, approachable, and professional comes down to one thing: feeling comfortable in your poses. Trust me when I say you’re not alone if your hesitant to walk on a shoot, it happens almost every time and I am here to guide you along the way to make you look and feel your best.

Whether you’re prepping for your first brand shoot or looking to refresh your website and social media imagery, I created this complete guide of my top posing techniques: Standing, Seated in a Chair, Ground Posing, Working in Action, and Hand Placement. My top priority is to make sure my clients feel confident, comfortable, and beautiful in front of the camera.
Standing Poses
Standing poses can be both elegant and empowering, but it’s not always easy to know where to start. Standing shots radiate energy, authority, and confidence, but standing stiffly in front of a lens is where most people get nervous.

- Shift Your Weight: Whether you’re standing with your feet together or apart, shifting your weight from one foot to the other can help create a natural and effortless look in your photos. It can also help to elongate your legs and add dimension to your pose.
- Mind Your Posture & Chin Angle: Standing up straight with good posture is key to creating a confident and poised look in your photos. Make sure your shoulders are relaxed and your back is straight, with your chin slightly tilted down.
- Experiment with Body Angles: Different angles can completely change the look and feel of your standing poses. Try angling your body slightly to the left or right, or tilting your head in different directions, moving your leg in front or behind. This can help create a sense of movement and add visual interest to your photos.
Remember, the key to nailing your standing poses is to relax and have fun with it!
Seated & Chair Posing
Chairs are versatile props that can be used to create different moods and styles in your branding photography photos. Whether you’re going for a classic look or something more playful and creative, a chair can add depth and dimension to your photos.
- Sit on the Front Edge: When posing with a chair, it’s essential to find a comfortable position. You don’t want to look stiff or awkward, so try to relax your shoulders and sit naturally. Tip: Sit on the edge of the chair.
- Lean In or Lean Back:
- Lean slightly forward toward the camera with your forearms or elbows resting on your knees or a table. This signals warmth, engagement, and connection with your audience.
- Lean back gently into the chair with an ankle crossed or hands relaxed over your lap to convey ease and authority.
- Use that Chair as a Prop: Don’t be afraid to use the chair non-traditionally! Try sitting sideways or reversing the chair so you’re leaning over the backrest. Resting your elbows or chin on the back of a chair creates a fun, candid, and playful framing.

Don’t be afraid to experiment and try new poses, and most importantly, enjoy the experience.
Ground & Floor Posing
Whether you’re taking photos in a park or in your own backyard or office, sitting poses can create a relaxed and natural vibe.

- Experiment with Seating Positions: Try crossing your legs, extending them straight out, or leaning back on your elbows. These variations can help you find the most flattering pose for your body and create a more dynamic composition.
- Pay Attention to Your Posture: It’s easy to slouch when sitting on the ground. Make sure you’re sitting up straight and elongating your spine to create a flattering silhouette. You can also tilt your chin slightly downward to create a more flattering angle for your face.
- Play with Overhead & Low Angles: Ground posing offers great opportunities for creative camera angles. Shots captured from slightly above looking down feel intimate and friendly, while low-level shots bring out a grounded, relaxed confidence.
Posing “In Action” & Working
Whether you’re capturing candid shots at the office, or showcasing your craft at home, these tips will help you nail that authentic work look. Showcasing your actual workflow makes your branding photos infinitely more relatable and compelling to future clients, and makes sure your photos don’t look like stock images.
- Show Your Actual Process: Instead of just staring at a blank screen, perform a real task during the shoot!
- Creatives & Makers: Sketch, paint, arrange florals, bake a cake or organize mood boards.
- Coaches, Consultants, Real Estate Agents: Take an actual work call, write in a journal, or review notes.
- Service Providers: Demonstrate client interactions, setup routines, or tool preparation.
- Use Relevant Work Props: Props give your hands a job and immediately establish context for what you do. Bring items you use daily like laptops, notebooks, luxury pens, client files, or tools of your trade.
- Keep Your Desk Environment Authentic: Add subtle personal touches around your workspace like a favorite mug, desk plant, or framed quote. Keep the setup tidy but lived-in so it feels genuinely yours. This will make the shots look natural and not overly staged.

“What Do I Do with My Hands?”
The most common question clients ask during a photoshoot! Having a plan for your hands eliminates awkwardness instantly, and I am here to help guide you.
My 7 go-to hand positions that look effortless:
- Holding a Prop: Hold a coffee mug, phone, tablet, notebook, or pen.
- Creating Movement: Run a hand gently through your hair or adjust a jacket lapel, button, or cuff.
- Pockets: Place your hands—or just your thumbs—partially into your pants or blazer pockets.
- Thoughtful Touch: Lightly rest one hand under your chin or gently touch your cheek for a contemplative shot.
- Resting on Surfaces: Place your hands or forearms lightly on a desk, tabletop, counter, or nearby wall.
- Crossed Arms: Cross your arms loosely across your chest with your hands resting softly on your arms (avoid tight fists).
- Behind the Neck/Head: Place one hand behind your neck or head for a carefree, lifestyle vibe.
