Two Coats, Three Looks, and One Very Good Time

“We talked, we laughed, and about ten minutes in, Linda forgot the camera was even there.”

Every session starts the same way, honestly. My client walks in a little nervous, a little unsure where to put her hands, and completely convinced she’s “not photogenic.” Every single time, by the end, we’re laughing about something ridiculous and they’re asking when we can do this again. This session with Linda, a creative executive shooting her lifestyle brand images right in her own beautifully designed Los Angeles home, was no exception.

The Session: 45 Minutes, Three Looks, Zero Stress

Linda’s home already had the perfect bones for her brand: warm light, gorgeous textures, spaces that felt like her. So instead of dragging her across town for a lifestyle headshot session, we brought the studio to her! Which, if you’re a busy executive in Los Angeles or the surrounding Valley, is honestly the move. No traffic, no wardrobe bag the size of a small car, no wasted afternoon.

In just 45 minutes, Linda walked away with three completely different looks. Here’s the trick I use with almost every branding and lifestyle client:

You don’t need a full outfit change to get variety in your brand photos. A couple of tops layered under a blazer or coat can give you three or four distinct looks without eating up your session time. Slip a jacket on for the “boss meeting” shot, take it off for something softer, and swap the top underneath for a whole new mood. It’s the fastest way to maximize a mini session, and it travels beautifully between locations too – one coat, endless versatility.

That’s exactly what we did with Linda: a tailored coat over a simple top for her polished, executive-presence shots, then the coat came off for a warmer, more approachable look in her sunlit living room, and one more subtle top swap gave us a third distinct feel, all without a single full outfit change or a minute of dead time.

The Part Nobody Talks About: The Nerves

Linda was nervous, in that “please don’t make me look at the camera” way. Here’s the thing that I tell every single client who sits down in front of my lens, because it’s true for pretty much all of us (yes, even me): being photographed is vulnerable. It’s normal to feel awkward. That feeling doesn’t mean anything is wrong with you, it means you’re human.

That’s my actual job. Not just clicking a shutter, but directing you, guiding you, and pulling out the version of you that’s already there, the real one, not the stiff, overcorrected version, and definitely not some AI-generated stand-in. Your headshot and brand photos are doing the talking for you before a client, a follower, or a future collaborator ever hears your voice. That first impression should be real. It should be you.

Why It Matters: AI-generated headshots might be fast, but they can’t capture the way you actually laugh, the way your eyes crinkle when you talk about your work, or the energy you bring into a room. Authentic brand photography builds trust before a single word is exchanged, which is exactly what your lifestyle headshots and business brand images are meant to do.

Linda warmed up fast. A few minutes of talking about her business, a couple of genuinely terrible jokes on my part, and she was fully at ease in front of the camera, relaxed, laughing, and looking like herself. That’s the goal every time.

Why In-Home Lifestyle Sessions Work So Well

  1. Comfort breeds confidence. Shooting in your own space means one less unfamiliar thing to adjust to.
  2. Your home is already your brand. The books on your shelf, the light in your kitchen, the art on your walls, it all tells your story better than a plain studio backdrop ever could.
  3. More locations, less time. A single home can give you four or five completely different backdrops, which is a dream for a 45-minute mini session.
  4. It’s relaxed. Laughs are welcome. A glass of champagne or a cocktail after? Even more welcome. You should be able to enjoy your own session.

Frequently Asked Questions About Lifestyle Headshot Sessions

How long does a lifestyle branding mini session take?

Many of my Los Angeles clients book a 45-minute mini session, which is plenty of time for three distinct looks when you plan your layering in advance.

Do I need multiple outfits for a brand photography session?

Not necessarily. Layering a coat or jacket over one or two tops is an easy way to create several looks without a full wardrobe change, ideal for shorter sessions.

Can headshots be taken at my home instead of a studio?

Absolutely. In-home lifestyle sessions are a favorite for creative executives and entrepreneurs across Los Angeles, the San Fernando Valley, and Santa Clarita who want their space to reflect their personal brand.

What if I feel nervous in front of the camera?

You’re in good company; almost every client feels this way at first. A good photographer directs and guides you so the nerves melt away and your true self comes through.

Linda, thank you for trusting me with your story, your home, and your brand. Watching you go from nervous to laughing and completely yourself was the best part of my week.
