Wouldn’t You Like to Know : Getting Past the “Oops”

August 4, 2022

Welcome to our new Mentorship series! My raw and real, personal story of how I got to where I am and how you can too! This month is all about what I learned from my mistakes.

I remember one of the first weddings I shot for another photographer solo. Let me tell you, I F@$KED that one up. I was a mess and actually ruined some of their images because I didn’t understand flash properly. I thought I did, but clearly I didn’t. The photographer was so kind to me and the rest of the images were great, but much of the reception was blurry. I can’t believe he even gave me another shot, but he explained flash to me again and so did my husband (boyfriend at the time) and I never made that mistake again. It was a horrible mistake to make, but I learned from it, the clients were perfectly happy and the photographer gave me another chance!

These things happen and as long as we learn from them we can continue and improve. I used to freak out when something went wrong or didn’t work correctly. Now I can troubleshoot in the heat of the moment and know one way or another I can problem solve it (I also have back-ups). The more you shoot and the more experience you get the easier and more calm things will run. It does come with experience unfortunately, so keep at it.
