We know that not everyone loves being in front of the camera. Believe me, we’ve seen it all and I’ve been there too. But whether you’re camera-shy or just not thrilled about having your picture taken, we believe everyone can enjoy the experience with a little preparation and the right mindset. Here are our top 11 tips for people who hate having their photo taken, making it fun and easy!
1. Choose the Right Photographer
Finding a photographer who makes you feel comfortable is key. You want someone who gets your vibe and makes you feel at ease. A great photographer will know how to bring out your best, even if you’re not a natural in front of the camera.
2. Communicate Your Concerns
If there are certain angles or poses you’re not comfortable with, let your photographer know. I love getting to know our clients and understanding their preferences. The more we know, the better we can tailor the session to make you feel amazing.
3. Dress for Confidence
Wear something that makes you feel fabulous! Whether it’s your favorite jeans and a cozy sweater or a chic dress, choose an outfit that reflects your style and makes you feel good. Confidence shines through the lens! Nothing with a little shopping for a fresh new look to make you feel even more confident.
4. Focus on Fun & Encourage Laughter
Forget about the perfect pose or the perfect smile. Focus on having fun! Bring a prop, crack a joke, or dance a little. Laughter and playfulness can lead to some of the best candid photos, when you’re genuinely enjoying yourself. Whether it’s making funny faces, telling jokes, or just goofing around, let yourself have fun.
5. Bring a Friend
Having a friend or loved one around can make a world of difference. They can help you relax, make you laugh, and remind you to enjoy the moment. Plus, who doesn’t love a good photo buddy? I once had a branding client call one of her friends/clients to get a more natural look (she also happened to be my client) and we got some of the best natural candid images from that.
6. Trust the Process
It’s normal to feel a bit awkward at first, but trust the process. Our job is to make you look and feel your best. Trust that we see your best angles and know how to capture them beautifully. Don’t be surprised if it takes you 10-20 minutes to warm up and get into the groove. I’ll be there along the way guiding you, talking to you, telling you what to do with your hands, and getting you to be genuine and laugh!
7. Practice Makes Perfect
If you’re really nervous, practice in front of a mirror at home. Get to know your angles, practice your smile, and find poses that feel natural. It might feel silly, but it can really help!
8. Create a Playlist of Your Favorite Jams
Nothing sets the mood quite like your favorite music. Before the shoot, create a playlist of songs that make you feel happy and relaxed. I’m all about those feel-good vibes, and we love playing some tunes to keep the energy upbeat and fun.
9. Indulge in a Little Pampering
Treat yourself to a bit of self-care before the shoot. Whether it’s a relaxing bath, a quick meditation session, or even a professional makeup session, doing something that makes you feel pampered can boost your confidence and help you relax.
10. Hydrate and Snack Smart
Stay hydrated and keep some light snacks handy. Being well-fed and hydrated keeps your energy levels up and your skin looking fresh. Avoid heavy meals right before the shoot to prevent any discomfort.
11. Breathe and Release Energy
Take deep breaths if you are feeling tense. Move your body, shake it out, release the energy and then smile (no need, it will come naturally) . This helps release any tension in your body and gets you feeling loose and relaxed. Plus, it’s a great way to shake off any jitters, even in the middle of a pose.
I believe that everyone deserves to feel confident and beautiful in front of the camera. So, let’s make it a fun and memorable experience together! Hate having your photo taken and ready to book your session? Let’s capture some magic!
