If you know me, you know I never travel without booking a professional photographer. From our first adventure in Italy back in 2016 to the misty highlands of Scotland, our wedding in Costa Rica, Spain, and most recently another dreamy Italian getaway — we’ve captured each destination through professional photos.

Let me tell you: waking up at 6 am for hair and makeup, getting dressed up, and meeting a local photographer is absolutely worth it every single time.

Maybe it’s because I’m a photographer myself, maybe it’s because I love stepping in front of the camera for once, or maybe it’s the way these photos transport me right back to those exact moments. Whatever it is, these sessions have become one of my favorite parts of traveling.

Even my husband (who definitely complains when the alarm goes off) loves and cherishes these images. They end up on our travel wall at home and remind us daily of the experiences we’ve shared around the world.

This year I convinced my best friend and her new husband (well really my best friend and she made her husband do it, just like mine) to join us for our photo adventure in Cortona! We captured friend photos and couple photos and a few of just me. It was a blast and well worth it. She even had her wedding photos 3 days prior and still wanted to partake in the fun photo adventures for her travel memories.

Why Professional Travel Photos Matter

1. You get to be present. Instead of worrying about setting up a tripod or handing your phone to a stranger, you can simply enjoy the moment together while a professional captures your connection and the stunning scenery.

How to Choose the Right Travel Photographer

When I travel, I research photographers who truly capture the vibe of the place. Sometimes they’re vacation photographers, other times they’re wedding or couple photographers whose style and personality resonate with me.

Here are a few things I look for:

1. Style & storytelling. Do they capture candid, natural moments? Do their images feel authentic and full of life?
2. Connection. Do you feel a spark when you see their portfolio? Do they seem like someone you’d enjoy spending an early morning with?
3. Local expertise. A local photographer will know the best light, hidden spots, and how to avoid the crowds.
4. Reviews & experience. Check what other travelers have said about their experience. It’s always helpful to hear first-hand stories.
