When to Photograph a Newborn

Portrait

March 25, 2021

Newborns are so precious and I am very excited to introduce our new newborn session offers.

For newborns, I like to photograph in the first 1-2 weeks of life. The sweet spot is 3-10 days! This allows me to capture your baby’s newness. You will treasure these memories of just how little your baby was. The peach fuzz. The squishy folds. The sleepy face. And yes, the first cries, too.

Your newborn session is scheduled in advance, based on your due date. Once you’re on my books for a newborn session, it’s a floating appointment. The final date and time gets set once you’ve had the baby – so no matter if your babe is late, early, or born right on your due date, we will find a date that works best for you!

While this is usually a stressful time for new parents, it’s also the time when baby is sleepiest, most cooperative and produces the best photographs.

This way, the newborn session doesn’t get put off until the baby is a month or two, because by then, the babies have changed so much it’s no longer possible to capture how they were when they were brand new.

Most likely you’ll find that you want many sessions of your baby throughout that first year, which is normal because every month brings so many big changes. If you have an interest in that, ask me about my baby plan, which offers sessions throughout the year.

Why 10 days?

It’s much easier and comfortable for a newborn to fold and be molded into those adorable poses while they are still completely flexible. Did you know that a newborn has 300 bones, while an adult has 206. After 10-14 days (2 weeks) they start to fuse together into calcified bone, that is why it’s harder for them to get into those squishy, curly positions after 2 weeks.

There is a difference between a 3 day, 7 days, 10 day, 2 week and 2 month old newborn. It’s not to say that one baby will be easier to pose over another. All babies and sessions are different and the poses highly depend on how comfortable and cooperative the baby is.

Younger babies tend to be more sleepy and curl into those adorable poses with much more ease. I highly recommend booking your session for your newborn between 3-7 days, however I have been know to take on sessions of newborns that are 3 weeks, it just changes the approach to how we pose the baby.

My baby is already older than 2 weeks!

I have photographed newborn sessions up to 4 weeks, we just take a different approach to the session. Babies begin to stretch and extend their arms and legs after two weeks, making it harder for them to naturally curl up during photos. Don’t be discouraged, they just may not fold into those squishy positions, but there is nothing wrong with a warm, snuggled wrap to capture your session or even eyes open.

With our new lifestyle session you really can capture your newborn at anytime. So if you missed that sweet spot and your newborn is older than 4 weeks, we still have an option that will work for you!
