I have created a little series with our porch sessions to bring to light what our community is experiencing, feeling and doing during the COVID-19 quarantine and Safer At Home mandates.
Each of the families that participated in our porch sessions answered a series of questions and we asked them to be as open and vulnerable as they’d like. We are all feeling so many emotions, ups and downs, happiness, sad, discouraged, fears, and hopefulness that I wanted to make sure this time wasn’t forgotten.
A true statement that we are all in this together – and everything we are feeling is ok, accepted and we aren’t alone.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST GRATEFUL FOR DURING THESE TIMES?
Every morning as I sit in meditation, I list the things I am grateful for. At the top of the list is always the health and safety of my family. Additionally, I often find myself feeling grateful for nature’s daily gifts. The chirping of the birds, the sunshine, the sound of the rain, the smell of the wildflowers, and the fresh air.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST FEARFUL OF OR CONCERNED ABOUT DURING THIS TIME?
I am most concerned about the country re-opening too quickly without enough protocols in place. I am immunocompromised, as well as several members of my family, and I am worried that our safety will be jeopardized if we try to “go back to normal” too quickly.
WHAT ACTIVITIES ARE YOU (AND YOUR FAMILY) DOING TO PASS THE TIME?
I spend a ton of time tending to our little balcony garden. I find that putting my hands in the earth helps me feel grounded and held, and the witnessing of new life gives me a sense of calm. My husband is a phenomenal cook, so we have been spending a lot of our free time in the kitchen. He is always creating some new tasty invention, and I am usually baking. I just made my first focaccia from scratch! What can I say, it seems like the victories in the kitchen keep the heart strong. I have also been taking more time to read, engage in physical movement, and expand on my professional ideas.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO BRING JOY TO YOUR DAY?
I meditate daily, and spend as much time as I can with my little garden. Every time a new leaf pops out, or a new little flower blooms I am filled with so much joy. Facetime calls with my friends and family have become a reliable source of joy as well.
WHAT IS IT LIKE TO HAVE THESE PICTURES DURING THIS MOMENT IN TIME?
I have always loved photographs. In particular, I have always found comfort in the way a photo is able to capture a moment in time that will never repeat itself, and almost crystalize it. I feel incredibly grateful to have these photos to remember this surreal season of life, and I will treasure them.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO POST-SAFER AT HOME?
I am looking forward to a lot of things, but most of all I am looking forward to being able to spend time with both my family and friend-family.
