How We Are Photographing Newborns During Covid

Portrait

March 5, 2021

Safety has always been our main priority when photographing. Doesn’t matter if you are climbing a cliff for your engagement, walking the beach during your maternity session or posing for a newborn session. Safety always comes first and with newborns we are hyper-aware. Covid for sure has shifted many concerns for photographing especially newborns. But that doesn’t need to stop you from booking a newborn session as we have implemented the following safety precautions as well as a few new packages to fit your comfort level.

We are sure you have concerns about staying safe and healthy at this time, too. I am sharing the current ways we are implementing to ensure our shooting environment remains safe and clean for your portrait session.

I am offering both studio or in-home location portraits of your newborn, as well as hands-on posed or complete social distance options.

Update: I am fully vaccinated as of May 11, 2021

Important: The following is not medical advice. Consult with your medical professional for a complete assessment of the risks before committing to a professional photography session.

Krista Mason Photography Covid-19 Newborn Safety Guidelines

Studio and Newborn Prop Cleanliness

  1. We are taking a maximum of 2 sessions a day in our home-studio allowing ample time to disinfect and clean all props in-between sessions.
  2. Deep cleaning of shooting area and bathroom before and after sessions
  3. Extra attention is given to high-traffic or high-touch surfaces such as flooring, seating, doorknobs, light switches, counters,t able-tops and bathrooms.
  4. All hard props (bowls, baskets etc.) will be wiped down and sanitized in-between sessions
  5. All fabrics, wraps or clothing will be washed prior to use
  6. Wash of hands with soap and water, and use hand sanitizer throughout the session
  7. Wearing a protective double face mask
  8. For the time being, only I will be present during the portrait session (no assistant, to comply with social distancing measures)
  9. For the time being, only newborns will be photographed in the home studio with either mom or dad present. Call to discuss if you need assistance of both parents, but we are limiting the amount of people allowed inside.

In-Home and Lifestyle Sessions

  1. Only use props that you know have been washed and sanitized by you personally or me, your photographer.
  2. All hard props (bowls, baskets etc.) will be wiped down and sanitized in-between sessions
  3. All fabrics, wraps or clothing will be washed prior to use
  4. Wash of hands with soap and water, and use hand sanitizer throughout the session
  5. Wearing a protective double face mask
  6. For the time being, only I will be present during the portrait session (no assistant, to comply with social distancing measures)
  7. Since I will be handling your newborn, I will have a clean shirt for each session.
  8. I will direct and guide you and any family members being photographed from a social distance, the only handling I will potentially do is with your baby and this is dependant on your comfort level. We do have options where we are completely hands off, masked up at a social distanced space for your session

If you become unwell within 7 days after your session, please let us know immediately, even if you feel it is only mild.

  1. If I or clients have been in contact with anyone who has a fever, cough or symptoms then we will inform you before the session, and discuss rescheduling
  2. All clients (and their family members being photographed) are required to take their temperature at home before they visit the studio. We do the same before you arrive.
  3. We are social distancing and being very serious about staying home, avoiding crowds, outings, restaurants, friends, etc.
  4. My camera and phone will be wiped down in-between sessions.
  5. Please note these precautions are fluid, meaning that they may change, added as we navigate through this new normal.

What to Expect from Your Session

We are currently offering a few different session types. Here is what you can expect from each!

Lifestyle-in-Home Session

1 hour session in home of family // 75+ digital files

-What to Expect-

  • an in-home lifestyle portrait session of parents, kids and baby using your living room, bedroom and nursery
  • whether baby is asleep, awake, crying, changing or nursing we will capture an hour in the life of your newborn, of course, with my guidance for posing
  • 5-8 posed family shots: family group, kids and baby, parents and baby
  • **COVID – for this session I can remain socially distance from everyone and utilize the areas of the home such as the living room, bedroom and nursery

Newborn Session with Family and Posed Baby

3 hour session in your home // capturing your squishy newborn solo and with family // 75+ digital files

-What to Expect-

  • an in-home lifestyle portrait session of parents, kids and baby using your living room, bedroom and nursery
  • baby solo posed in those adorable squishy newborn poses utilizing our props, wraps and accessories
  • For newborns, I like to photograph in the first 1-2 weeks of life. This allows me to capture your baby’s newness. You will treasure these memories of just how little your baby was. The peach fuzz. The squishy folds. The sleepy face. And yes, the first cries, too
  • The newborn session is best if baby is sleeping and content. With newborn sessions sometimes it takes a while, just depends on the baby. It can be a waiting game to get them to sleep and that is why we allow the 3 hours. This allows me to wrap, fold and pose them in those squishy adorable ways. Don’t worry even if your baby is awake the entire time we will still capture some great images
  • 5-8 posed family shots: family group, kids and baby, parents and baby // 3-4 poses of baby solo with different wraps and/or backgrounds – this highly depends on how baby is cooperating
  • **COVID – for this session in addition to the above family session scenario, I am handling the baby using our sanitized props and wraps. I am constantly washing hands and masked up
