Quarantine Celebrations

April 23, 2020

These #quarantineIRLsessions have really been taking off. I am loving the creativity and reasons behind why people are partaking in these sessions!

Not sure if this family looks familiar to you, but they were my very first #quarantineIRLsessions and they opted for another one. Why, you ask? Well, for a special occasion, their 4th anniversary! I mean how cute is that! I was so excited for this session you guys, I can’t even tell ya! When she told me what they were doing for the day and that she was surprising her husband with a rad car to drive around and have lunch in, I was so happy for them. I have seen so many celebrations come and go for birthdays, anniversaries, and other milestone announcements that I was happy to hear they were still staying safe and self-quarantined but ALSO celebrating breaking up the mundane and enjoying what otherwise would have been a super special night for them. It brings me so much joy in a time that we are uncertain and living with fear or anxiety and living a COVID-Rollercoaster, where one minute you can be happy, and the next you can be productive, the next sad, scared, numb, etc.

Doing these sessions has been a major mindshift for me personally as well as everyone that is partaking. Who knew a quick 10-minute photoshoot in your sweats and PJ’s would bring someone so much joy. Ok well for this celebration, our lovely couple put on their wedding day attire and had a little fun with this rental, but that’s what I am talking about…bringing joy in any way that we can. They drove around in that 1965 Ford Mustang Convertible GT grabbed some to-go lunch from Katsu-ya and took in the sights. Who says you can’t be creative and fun in celebrating life events while #quarantinedathome?  We can still celebrate in creative ways, have fun and be safe and quarantined. Special occasions may look different for a while, but let’s still make them special!

You might have seen our newest blog series, Quarantine IRL – Real Talk, where we ask our clients questions about their shoot and their everyday life during the ‘Safer at Home’ mandate. We are going to continue that today with Elsa of Composed Living, who is the brains behind the Mustang anniversary idea!

“We had the best day – it honestly didn’t even feel like quarantine. It was just pure fun. The photos are gorgeous, obviously – can’t wait to see the rest!”

Celebrations are a big deal in our family in general, but Chad and I have always placed extra importance on celebrating our marriage. Originally we had planned to be in Ireland for two weeks, so when that got cancelled I had to think of something else to do. I reached out to some creative girlfriends, and came up with a few awesome ideas!

As a surprise for Chad, I rented a vintage car (it was supposed to be a 1970 Pontiac GTO, but the morning of they let me know that car was out of commission – so we ended up with a 1965 Mustang convertible, and it was perfect!). We dressed up in our wedding outfits and had Krista take photos of us in the driveway. Honestly, it was more fun that our actual wedding day – the kids were in their pjs, I was barefoot in my driveway dancing in my wedding dress – it was awesome. After the photo shoot, we ordered sushi takeout from our favorite spot in Encino (Katsu-ya), and drove down Sunset to PCH where we had a picnic overlooking the beach. We drove along the coast for a bit, enjoying the sunshine and the convertible and the fresh air. When we came home, Chad and the boys set up a gorgeous alfresco dining area in our backyard, filled with candles, lanterns, and flowers. We ordered a fancy dinner from The Bellwether, including craft cocktails to-go, and the kids plated the food for us and acted as our tiny waiters for the evening. Everyone had the best time, and the whole day felt like such a special celebration.

Drinking whiskey and dancing in Irish pubs!

It was such a treat to have a whole day where being quarantined wasn’t the main focus. I felt joyful and free for the first time in a long time.

Being silly with the kids during the photoshoot, and driving along the coast.

I am so glad that Elsa and Chad were able to celebrate their special day and still make it so fabulous. I got to thinking and decided to reach out to my good friend Robin of RMBO Collective, an established wedding and event planner! Much to my excitement, she is now offering virtual planning and design consulting services. So if you’re not feeling very creative but still want to make your photo shoot or celebration extra special and personal, she’s your gal! Here’s an explanation of what she is offering from her directly:

“I believe that celebrating our life moments, even in quarantine, is so important, and I want to help people create those moments of joy in their homes. We may not be able to gather on a large scale at our favorite places for a while, but that doesn’t mean we should stop celebrating. We need to bring joy into each other’s lives and remind each other that we are still connected.

Robin is offering virtual planning and design consulting services for small-scale celebrations. Think of taking your Zoom birthday parties, wedding anniversaries, styled porch photo shoots or in-home dinners with your quarantine crew up a notch and make them extra special, thoughtful, heartfelt and polished with the creative and logistical guidance of an event pro. I want to translate the magic of the extraordinary weddings and social gatherings I’ve been creating for the past decade and make my tips and techniques and resources accessible to everyone at every budget on the most intimate scale.”
